Health Information

As the wind down to the school year approaches, your thoughts may be turning to long summer evenings at a favourite campsite or family cabin, or lazy mornings with a book and cup of coffee on the patio. Sometimes, though, the unexpected happens. Knowing what to do if you are seriously hurt in a motor vehicle or sporting accident, sustain another injury, or become seriously ill will help you lean on your ASEBP benefits when you need them.
Who should I contact?
During your school’s non-instructional days in July and August, contact your employer—usually, your Human Resources department—to inform them about your illness or injury, even if you are not expected at work anytime soon.
What can I expect from ASEBP after I notify my employer?
ASEBP will reach out to you via email to provide information about the Sick Leave Support program after you notify your employer about your illness or injury. ASEBP can provide medical specialist referrals and assessments to assist with your recovery, even if you are under the care of your family physician or nurse practitioner. While ASEBP cannot help you find a primary care provider, there are many other ways ASEBP staff can help.
What happens if I’m expected to be away from work longer?
If you experience complications in your recovery or are expected to be away from work for several weeks or months, ASEBP can coordinate a gradual return to work in the new school year or start the Extended Disability Benefits (EDB) application process to ensure that you aren’t without pay once school resumes.
Is there a cost involved?
Sick leave support is free to all group plan members, including individuals over 65 with ASEBP income replacement benefits.
Can I continue to use my ASEBP health benefits over the summer?
Of course! Use your ASEBP health benefits to help reset your mental and physical health over the break, and do not forget about services available through the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP). You and your dependants have access to a yearly allotment of confidential support services, including sleep coaches, naturopathic practitioners, and occupational therapists.
If you are on contract, your health benefits end on the date specified in the letter of employment from your school district.
